Technology is now placing "local power" as a immediate and viable soution for a decarbonised future. Ctrade is in partenership with the Centre for Distributed Energy and Power (CenDEP). This is an alliance of organisations that has the aim of providing a technical and commercial focus for local power so that it becomes a viable and important part of the Australian energy market. Small generators include wind turbines, solar panels, micro turbines, fuel cells and cogeneration (combined heat and power). As a member Ctrade supports these concepts and is currently developing the Solar Schools Initiative.

The Intelligent Grid Research Program is an Australian collaboration between five universities investigating technologies to make our electricity networks smart, greener and more efficient.

An "intelligent" electricity grid has a minimal amount of waste and a highly efficient use of power. It is an electricity network that uses local energy resources and advanced communication/control technologies to deliver electricity more cost-effectively, with lower greenhouse intensity.

Local power means the electricity grid is supported by many small levels of generation rather than one large unit, you may also hear it called distributed (or embedded) generation. A distributed model can employ renewable forms of energy reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Creating and using electricity locally is far more efficient due to gains in transmission and heat loss. It also has the ability to secure a community's energy future.
